On Sunday, Illinois was reminded that Mother Nature is in charge and beautiful. About 3:45AM, I woke up from a sound sleep. When I looked out the window, the landscape had been transformed into another world by a combination of snow, ice, and fog.

I stood looking outside for a few minutes, marveling at the artwork that was my yard, then woke the rest of the household to share it with me. It was one of the moments where we were at one with the world around us and, despite being together, we were alone. Silence had meaning. It was tempting to go outside and wander the streets at that hour, but to have done so would have been to risk crossing into the world of faerie.

As beautiful as it is, and as much as I love the tranquil calm of winter spreading new snow...
...waking me up at 3:45 A.M. is ONLY a good way to cause murders.
Which reminds me. We're about to have a major winter storm here. So I'm going to take before-and-after photos of the world.
As far as I'm concerned, the faerie can take this winter and SHOVE IT UP THEIR #@*$&'S !
*ahem*
I'd quite like Spring please, thank you.
That said, I DO love the sort of winter situation that Lori's talking about. They used to happen here when I was walking home from work late at night. So the world is quiet, and looks like those photos (but darker), and I am nearly the only thing moving. It's like time stops for a minute. It's really wonderful.
Kristine, this is Spring.
. . . .
Pete, to be honest, I considered whether to wake the rest of the household or not, but decided it was worth the risk. Plus, the rest of the household just retired from a job that had them getting up at 4:00AM or earlier for the past thirty years or so.
